The Transit is now arguably the Sprinter's biggest rival in the overland space. Its AWD system is intelligent and handles snowy roads and loose gravel exceptionally well. Paired with the powerful EcoBoost gasoline engine, this van can fly up mountain passes that leave diesel engines wheezing.
It’s taller and boxier than the Sprinter, making interior builds slightly easier, and because it’s a Ford, finding a mechanic in remote towns is usually easier than finding a Mercedes specialist.

3. The "Classic" Ford E-Series (4x4 Conversion)

While they were never sold as 4x4s from the factory, companies like Quigley and Ujoint Offroad have been converting them for decades. A converted E-Series often uses heavy-duty truck axles, a true transfer case, and massive suspension lifts. They are simpler to fix, incredibly durable, and look absolutely mean.
Why: Extreme durability, true off-road capability (solid front axles), cheap parts, V8/V10 gasoline power.
The Vital Upgrades: It’s Not Just About the Van Itself
Buying a Sprinter 4x4 doesn't make you an overlander. It just means you have a capable base. To truly get off the beaten path safely, you need to budget for essential upgrades:

Tires are Everything: Ditch the stock highway tires immediately. You need aggressive All-Terrain (A/T) or Mud-Terrain (M/T) tires with strong sidewalls to resist punctures on sharp rocks.

Suspension and Lift: Even a Sprinter 4x4 benefits from aftermarket suspension. The stock suspension is designed for cargo on pavement, not washboards in Moab. A quality suspension upgrade improves ride comfort and adds crucial ground clearance.
