Yet it's consistently one of the most skipped steps in off-road driving, especially among people who are new to it or who assume their vehicle is capable enough to handle things at highway pressure.
It isn't. No matter how capable the vehicle, a tire at full road pressure is working against you the moment you leave the pavement. Here's everything you need to know about why it works, how to do it, and what pressures to aim for across different terrain types.
Why Airing Down Your Tires Makes Such a Big Difference Off-Road
At full highway pressure, a tire is inflated to be efficient and stable on smooth pavement. The contact patch, the area of the tire actually touching the ground, is relatively small and firm. On a hard, flat road that's exactly what you want. On dirt, rock, sand, or mud, that small, rigid contact patch works against you in several ways.

Common Mistakes When Airing Down That Are Easy to Avoid
Forgetting to air back up before the highway. Driving at highway speed on tires aired down to off-road pressures is dangerous. The tire generates excessive heat at speed, handling becomes imprecise, and fuel economy drops significantly. Always reinflate before returning to pavement and make the compressor as habitual a part of your exit from the trail as putting the vehicle back into 2WD.
Airing all four tires down to different pressures. Inconsistent pressure between tires, especially side to side, affects how the vehicle handles and can create uneven braking characteristics. Use a gauge on each tire and get them all to the same target.
Going too low for the terrain and the speed. Very low pressures on a fast gravel road increase the risk of a sidewall cut from sharp gravel impacts and can cause the tire to roll off the bead in hard cornering.
